Adult DVD

There has recently been a study conducted that addresses the place of adult films in the Australian economy. This was a formal, academic paper submitted to House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. It makes for very enlightening reading for those interested in the Australian adult DVD market and indeed the adult industry in a wider sense.

The first thing to note is the staggering size of the Australian domestic adult film industry which is estimated at approximately AU$245,000,000. Perhaps even more surprising is that because of the legal framework that governs the adult industry, there is a distinction between possessing and buying adult DVDs in many states. Because of this there is a considerable black market and therefore the above estimate could represent as little as half the true value. This distortion of the figures seems very likely as the legislation leads to not only a black market but many grey areas within the law, primarily affecting adult DVDs purchased for home use and this represents the overwhelming majority of industry turnover. Other market sectors include cable and/or TV subscriptions and pay per view services in hotels but these represent a fairly insignificant contribution to the market at only AU$8,000,000 and AU$7,500,000 respectively.

The report also notes that over 99.9% of adult DVD's purchased in Australia are produced overseas and there is virtually no domestically produced pornography available and suggests that less than 20 productions have been made in recent years. There is of course one big exception to this with the Melbourne based Abby Winters studio and this company is starting to make big inroads into the international market as well as being the undisputed flagship of Australian produced adult entertainment. Another Australian studio to note is Rosie Aussie Couples that features (as does Abby Winters) amateur Australians. Although it lacks widespread distribution channels and is largely absent from the Internet, this boutique studio did make it into the largest on line adult DVD retailers in Europe for a while, albeit with a very small number of titles. The small scale nature of this studio (and the Australian production industry in general) is also underlined by the fact that many titles do not remain present in the wider commercial marketplace for very long, suggesting that the production runs were limited and stocks simply ran out.
